The professional court reporter (stenographer), the person that sits and writes down, on that little machine, everything that is being said in a courtroom (nowadays on television and in the private sector of a lawyer's office), is as valuable today, if not more so, than 25 years ago.

Professional Court Reporters are being used for close-captioning and working with hearing impaired students in some colleges.  Perhaps the public needs to be more aware that this career opportunity is both rewarding and in demand.

For a single mother, a married woman with children, a mid-life change in careers, a high school graduate, or the man of the house, this career may be what you've been looking for.  Court Reporting School is the same as any four-year college, but the focus is mainly on court reporting skills and procedures.

Earning capacity is unlimited once you have become established in this field.  I place the average at about $65,000 to $80,000 a year for the court reporter who is working pretty much full time, with the ability to earn even more.

The rumor 10 years ago that tape recorders would replace us, was just that, a rumor.  We are still going strong, stronger than ever.  With technology today, the only thing that has happened to the profession, is that our production time has been reduced and our areas of concentration (the private sector and public broadcasting instead of a courtroom), has been diverted.

Even Fortune 500 companies are hiring court reporters to work for them in-house.

We should be recognized for the hard work we do, as well as the great justice we serve to the public.  The field of Court Reporting is strong and the need for new court reporters is even stronger.
